The northern hemisphere has been experiencing a period of high solar activity for the past few days. As we’ve had cloudy skies and rain, I didn’t think much about going out to try to see them like I did in May.

Only after seeing a friend’s pictures on social media did I take my camera out to the front yard. Because of the house and trees, I didn’t have a clear view of the northern skies, but I was excited with what I saw through my viewfinder.

I snapped these first images at 8 pm–a beautiful purple but not nearly as dramatic as the pics others were sharing. Still, I was happy to have viewed the aurora borealis. I had half a thought of driving in search of a better view, but neither Paul nor Hannah were feeling the adventure.

Before heading to bed at 11 pm, I stood in my jammies and slippers in the front yard for one more look. And WOW! The skies were brighter than ever.

Magical.
