I’m still struggling with ideas for this year’s WHRL Christmas Tree Festival. I seriously lack inspiration for trees and wreaths beyond the Joyful Owl Wreath I do in some form each year. I could repeat some of the other felt bird and critter trees I’ve done, like the Owls and the Maine Woods Tree. The problem is that I can’t get excited about a redo.
We sometimes have winter/Christmas themed decorations and gifts that are part of the festival, so my mind started wandering down that path. And I stumbled across the idea of Christmas stockings.
Something different than the Owl Christmas Stockings I made for our family a few years ago. So I began Pintersting and visited Hobby Lobby last week for inspiration. I wanted to use my felt critters but didn’t quite have a plan.
Then I found this fabric at Marden’s – white snowflakes on a navy background that feels like a snowy night. This got the creative juices rolling, and I created this Christmas Moose Stocking.
The moose is a sized bit larger than the free Maine Moose pattern found on my blog or the Moose Pattern Kit available in the shop. I also made him from a lighter brown felt (peat moss) than the kit version (light brown) to lighten up the scene. Pea soup felt and grassy meadows make the tree with safari brown for the tree trunks. Bugle beads give the illusion of ice or snow on the trees, and the north star (attached with metallic silver floss) watches over the scene.
The inside lining is white corduroy that I picked up at Mardens for $1.99/yard. The stiffness of the corduroy gives the stocking a nice form when hanging. Although I’d purchased some interfacing to use in the event I found another cotton for the lining. I will enter this guy in the WHRL Christmas Tree Festival. Now, what critter stocking to create next so I can auction them off as a set?
Here’s my pattern and some basic instructions if you’d like to try your hand!
This stocking is absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! I’m pleased with how it turned out. 🙂
Love it! How about using your squirrel, wolf, racoon and so on patterns for more stockings to decorate your tree?
Hello! I love your stockings. Do you always line the stockings? My stocking is made from 3mm thick felt. I used your ideas to create a Teddy bear for my granddaughter who is named Teddy. I am deciding how to finish it. THANK YOU for sharing everything.
And are your owl top stocking cuffs felt? Thank you!!
Yes, the owls are felt. I’ve done others lined with cotton. It just depends on the vibe at the time!
