Hopeful, I first put the hummingbird feeder up on May 1st. I’m not sure when they arrived, but I spotted my first hummer on Sunday – May 8th. At first, it was a lone male. Today the aerial shows began with the arrival of another male.
I spent the morning on the porch with my coffee, reading and listening to the bird song. I recorded an astounding number of birds today, including:
- Red-breasted Nuthatch
- Black-capped Chickadee
- Cooper’s Hawk
- American Goldfinch
- Blue-headed Vireo
- American Crow
- Tufted Titmouse
- American Robin
- Downy Woodpecker
- Pine Warbler
- Chipping Sparrow
- Golden-crowned Kinglet
- Black-and-white Warbler
- White-throated Sparrow
- Canada Goose
- Common Yellowthroat
- Song Sparrow
- Broad-winged Hawk
- Purple Finch
- Ruby-throated Hummingbird
The Blue Jay, who didn’t show up until the afternoon, and the Phoebe are not pictured. The Merlin Bird ID refused to pick up the sound of the Phoebe – even though I was looking at it flying about the yard.
Last year I didn’t discover the bird identification app until later in the season. It’s exciting to see the birds living in the woods around the house who don’t visit the feeder.
I keep hearing about this app. I’m going to have to check it out!
