Having been born in Punxsutawney, PA, my father’s hometown, groundhogs (aka woodchucks and marmots) have long been part of our family culture. Gobbler’s Knob (where Punxsutawney Phil emerges every February 2nd) was just a walk up the road from my grandparent’s house. Yet, it’s taken me all these years to create a groundhog. Mom, this one is for you!
We have groundhogs here in Maine – they’ve been known to visit my porch now and again. With or without the top hat, he’s an easy pattern to make. Enjoy!

You had me at top hat!
He’s great, the top hat is perfect. Can’t wait for your woodland critters book to come out. Hope it’s still in the works!
Thank you Susan for another charming pattern! I may make one in white in honour of our Ontario groundhog, Wiarton Willie, sadly now deceased. But they are looking for another albino groundhog to replace him. In the meantime, I will enjoy yours. I love your patterns, stories and photos!
