The American Bison (or Buffalo) has been an often-requested pattern. For me, getting this felt critter right has been all about texture since they are shaggy beasts. I used Light Brown for the body and Safari Brown (a heathered felt) for the upper body. To give them more texture I experimented with rinsing them with water and then tossing them in the dryer. The result was a bubbly, wrinkled felt that better fit the Bison. Taking the texture a step further, I cut out some of the pieces with pinking shears (cutting outside the pattern line). The pinking shears cut in a saw-tooth pattern. To soften those “teeth” edges, I trimmed just the tips.
I hope you enjoy experimenting with the Bison pattern. Please share any ideas you come up with for making him look realistic. Have fun!

Where is my groundhog.
Thank you, so much! You are so generous, and I love your work.
It’s on the list, mom!
You’ve done it again. Another great felt animal. I am from the Black Hills of SD where I grew up with live bison to look at. Thanks for the great pattern for a great American icon.
You’re welcome!
Hello again,
I wrote earlier about downloading patterns…I have figured that out! Now are the patterns the actual size or doI need to enlarge?
Millie, they are actual size if the PDF is printed at 100%!
Once again you have come to my rescue for patterns for Xmas decorations for my little grandchildren – I started with a theme of native animals and birds – but have branched out over the years a bit, haha This year I will make a Corgi (homage to the queen, as well as my granddaughter’s latest obsession of dog breed) A porcupine for one grandson, who has a stuffed porcupine whom he loves, and an American Bison for the other grandson, as they visit a nearby National Park (Elk Island) where there is a herd of bison they can see. Thanks again for your generous sharing of these patterns. I enjoy your blog, your photos, and knowing how your daughter is doing. I feel we’ve become “friends” over the years. Take care,
