It’s 1036 miles from Milbridge to Granville, Ohio. We made the trip to college this year with a couple of stops along the way and moved Hannah into her new apartment suite on Friday.
She’s in a building of four-person apartments. Each student has a single room, and two girls share one of two bathrooms – and it has air conditioning!
A small living room and
a large kitchen make this a great place to spend senior year.
Move-in was staggered to de-densify the crowds on campus as much as possible. We had an appointment for drop-off and then had a two-hour window to get her moved in.
I confess that I ignored that guidance. I do not feel ready to leave until she’s unpacked, organized, and I know her room is a happy extension of home. There’s lots of evidence of Maine throughout her room.
A mini Joyful Owl Wreath watches over her. I’m grateful that she has such a happy place to be. One of her classes is entirely online; another is part online and part in person while the others are in person. This make-up could change as the semester progresses.
There’s a lot that’s looking different this year. Students are in quarantine on campus for the first two weeks. Each morning, they complete a self-health evaluation that gives them a badge to admit them to campus buildings – or send them to the health center if there are any concerns. Residence halls have been identified for quarantine if a student has been exposed to COVID or is waiting for the results of a test. Another space has been set aside for those that have received a positive COVID test, and they must quarantine under the watch of the health professionals on campus. Random COVID testing will help identify if there are any outbreaks throughout the semester. There are a host of new protocols for social life, academic life, getting too and from class, sanitizing your space, etc.
I’m grateful that Hannah has this opportunity to return to a true learning environment for her senior year. I know Hannah will do everything in her power to make sure that she stays safe. Here’s hoping the other students value this opportunity just as much.

A new way of doing everything…it’s definitely a new world.
My son had to leave work early because he was feeling sick. He didn’t have a fever but he does have a few employees over 60 working under him. He had some covid symptoms & just did not want to spread it to his coworkers so he went home.
He tested & it came back negative but he still has to stay away from work for at least another week.
This is so hard…no work, no pay….unless you have PTO to us but what else can employers do? They can’t pay people who aren’t working or they would go out of business.
And because my son had to test for covid, my daughter-in-law is in quarantine (no work) even though she hasn’t been sick. It is definitely a lot to get used to. It makes me not want to socialize at all for fear of being placed in quarantine.
It is scary! Hoping your chicks stay safe and can return to work! I know that at Hannah’s school professors have been given additional PTO for covid related issues so they don’t have to question if they go to work or not because of worry about losing pay or vacation time.
