I’ve hiked Pigeon Hill dozens of times – usually with Hannah – but we’ve never ventured out for the full moon. Downeast Coastal Conservancy organized a full moon hike this evening. I asked Paul if he wanted to go with. He said, “You’re not getting me up that hill during the day, let alone at night.” I didn’t let that stop me. I’ve felt at loose ends since dropping Hannah in Ohio and was eager for a bit of outdoors time. I went prepared: backpack, jacket, camera, two flashlights, bug spray, a chocolate bar and water. All the essentials for a nighttime excursion.
The peak is 317 feet above sea level. From one side, we watched the sunset, while the moon rose on the other. Those specs in the water are lobster boats tied up for the night in Dyer Bay with Cadillac Mountain in the background.
The moon rise was spectacular.
I don’t have much experience with night photography, so I did a bit of reading before leaving home.
The images I shot on manual mode didn’t work at all. I shot these images with aperture priority, and I’m relatively happy with them.
As I say with every photography outing – I need a bigger lens!
The moonlight lit the way down the hill until I hit tree cover. I brought the biggest, baddest flashlight I had, and that still just gave me a little glow to get my footing. It’s very dark in the woods at night!
This last one shot with my iPhone.
It was a lovely evening, but I’m happy to be home safe and sound with a cup of tea!

These photos are beautiful! I like how the cell phone picture caught some reflection in the water. And, by the way, your hair is gorgeous!!
Thank you. And these curls are a constant battle!
Beautiful pictures but risky. No firearm for bears or two legged predators. Keep this up and you’ll qualify as a cavalry scout or a statistic. Concern yourself with personal safety as much as those who love you do.
I was not alone, but I’m note sure none of the crew I was with had a gun!
Glad to read you were not alone. Black bears have become as common around here as coyotes. They work the fringes of suburban areas where people put out their garbage in their backyards or porches. Once they find food in or around a house they return multiple times. So far no bears in our neighborhood. We do get the occasional deer however.
