When Hannah is away, I enjoy creating care packages to send periodically. Monthly packages to Denmark was not fiscally viable, so I had to plan and secretly send them along with her.
Given her suitcase size and weight limit, I didn’t have much leeway. Five carefully curated pairs of socks, wrapped and labeled with the open date, were tucked into the bottom of her suitcase when she wasn’t looking. I added a THOUGHTFULLS card with a personal note to each – they’re little notes that are akin to fortune cookies with a hidden message inside.
Her first open date was the day after she arrived in Denmark (happy little sheep socks). Today, Valentine’s Day was the second open date (hearts and Scotties), and from here on out, they are dated the first day of each month. She told me that on February 1st, she went to her stash of packages only to realize there wasn’t one for that day, and sadly had to wait until February 14th. And she did. Wait that is. She was never that kid snooping at Christmas time because “it would ruin the surprise.”
It warms my heart that even though she is so far away, I can add a little bit of happiness to her day.
