It’s not every day that I can jump on a pattern suggestion. The idea has to resonate with me, and I have to have time. These days I’m so time-poor, it’s almost silly. I received a request for a Chinook Salmon. Folks from the non-profit Port Townsend Marine Science Center are using some of my patterns to make felt ornaments to sell in their gift shop to raise money for the organization – orcas, otters, seals, bald eagles, and kingfishers. I love hearing about folks using my bird and critter patterns for good. The request hit at just the right time.
I like to make realistic looking animals. To do this, sometimes I can’t find the right color of felt. So for this salmon, I’ve done something different. I painted my felt. I wanted just a light wash of salmon color. At first, I painted the felt pieces after they were cut out. In the end, I like the effect better when I paint the felt and then cut out the parts.
I put a small dab of orangey/salmon acrylic paint in a dish. I added water little by little to create a wash. I painted one edge of the felt and let it dry before cutting. Have fun!
You are so creative! I love it. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Susan,
Wow! Thanks so much for this. We are having so much fun making the felted versions of your wonderful animals. And I can’t wait to send some photos.
